Following a meeting of the Council of Energy Ministers of the European Union, European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson said that the EU can do without Russian gas. Her words are quoted by RIA Novosti .

“We are ready to do without Russian gas; we have been preparing for this in recent years,” she said.

At the same time, she noted that some countries of the community are concluding new contracts; in her words, “these are political decisions.”

She also noted that EU countries are preparing to stop the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine . According to Simson, the agreement on the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine expires at the end of 2024. She also clarified that the European Union does not expect a gas deficit against this background. According to her, gas reserves in the European Union are at 95%, which will avoid a deficit.

Earlier, Germany proposed restoring the Nord Stream gas pipeline.
