The creation of a 50-qubit ion quantum computer by Russian scientists means that the Russian Federation has become one of the world leaders in the field of quantum technologies. This was stated by the general director of the state corporation Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev , quoted by TASS .
According to Alexey Likhachev, the domestic 50-qubit quantum computer is the result of serious work by Russian scientists within the framework of the quantum computing roadmap coordinated by Rosatom.
He noted that this indicator for qubits reflects the systemic development of quantum technologies in Russia.
Likhachev emphasized that universities and academic institutes are working in a coordinated manner on common tasks in the country, their own expertise has been formed, an educational program has been launched in schools and university training of specialists. He called the current pace of work very high.
“As a result, only three countries, including Russia, have quantum computers on all four priority platforms – superconductors, ions, neutral atoms and photons,” said the head of Rosatom.
Likhachev specified that this work is being carried out in order to ensure Russia’s technological leadership for decades to come. The next step, he indicated, will be the practical application of quantum computers to improve people’s lives and give a new quality to the economy.
Let us recall that on Monday, on the sidelines of the Microelectronics-2024 forum, Nikolai Kolachevsky, Director of the P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (FIAN), demonstrated an ion trap, which is a key element of a quantum ion processor, to the head of the Russian government, Mikhail Mishustin .
The computer is based on qudit technology, which Russian scientists were the third in the world to use, after Austria and the USA .
At the moment, the quantum computer on the ion platform with 50 qubits is the most powerful quantum computer in the Russian Federation.
A scientific group from the Lebedev Physical Institute worked on its creation as part of the implementation of the roadmap for the development of the high-tech field of “Quantum Computing”, coordinated by Rosatom.
The first Russian quantum computer was presented to Russian President Vladimir Putin in July 2023 at the first Future Technologies Forum (FTF). It was a 16-qubit ion computer.
