The plenary session of the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva, where the Russian delegation is present, began with a scandal that representatives of Ukraine and their NATO patrons tried to arrange. Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev told Izvestia on October 14.

He noted that the verbal conflict and squabbles arose after the IPU Chairperson from Tanzania, Tulia Exon, presented a report on her work over the past six months, speaking during a visit to Russia as part of the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in St. Petersburg, where she met with Russian President Vladimir Putin , as well as the Chairpersons of both chambers of the Federal Assembly, Valentina Matviyenko and Vyacheslav Volodin.

“Mrs. Exxon had barely finished her report when the Ukrainians and the delegations from Western parliaments and countries that support them, who are here rigidly united in the ideological “group 12+”, immediately “went into battle”. They tried to accuse Ms. Exxon of going to Russia completely incorrectly, without any mandate from the IPU, and that.

During these attacks, representatives of Ukraine and Western countries made offensive statements about the Russian leader. In this regard, the Russian delegation interrupted this course of discussion several times, and eventually even lodged a protest. However, after all this, the president of the IPU herself responded with dignity and exhaustively to all the accusations of the “potential offenders”, and her speech was met with a powerful ovation, Kosachev reported.

“The essence of her answer was that she is acting on behalf of the entire IPU, and not just the interparliamentary group, that she is doing everything in her power to facilitate the settlement of conflicts on the globe, in this case the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. But, of course, also the conflict in the Middle East and other conflicts that are currently developing before our eyes. Because all of this is included in the mandate of the IPU, that is, it is parliamentary diplomacy,” the Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council noted.

The IPU Assembly is taking place in Switzerland from 13 to 17 October.
