The European Union cannot impose an embargo on arms supplies to Middle Eastern countries, EU Foreign Service spokesman Peter Stano said at a press conference in Brussels. According to him, as quoted by TASS, this issue is within the competence of national authorities of the states.

The EU has no competence in the area of arms trade; this issue is decided by member states ,” he said  , answering a question from journalists.

Stano added that the embargo could be introduced either by decision of the UN Security Council or as a result of a unanimous decision by all EU countries.
