Brazil’s Supreme Court said lawyers for social media platform X (formerly Twitter) transferred fines to the wrong bank account, delaying a decision on whether to reopen the service in the country, Reuters reports .
“The payment of the fines, which X’s lawyers claim the company has made correctly, is the only outstanding requirement of the court for the platform to resume operations in Brazil,” the Supreme Court spokesman said.
X suspended operations in Brazil, one of its largest and most attractive markets, in late August for failing to comply with court orders to moderate hateful content and failing to appoint legal representation in the country, as required by law.
Last Friday, it filed a new request to restore its services in Brazil, stating that all fines had been paid. In response, Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes demanded that the payment be transferred to the correct bank.
X’s lawyers have re-appealed to the court to allow the company to resume operations in Brazil, denying that the fines were paid into the wrong account. They also disagreed with the need to consult the attorney general before lifting the ban.
Before this, it became known that Musk’s social network paid more than $5 million in fines to return to Brazil.
Musk was previously expelled from an investment forum for posts about the protests.
