Deputy Chairman of the Central Bank of Russia Alexey Zabotkin stated that the Central Bank of the Russian Federation is no longer accountable to the International Monetary Fund ( IMF ). He said this in an interview with blogger Igor Rybakov .
According to him, the “myth” about the Central Bank’s dependence on the IMF was widespread in the 1990s, when Russia received loans from the IMF.
“We do not have any obligations to the IMF in terms of macroeconomic policy…,” he noted.
According to him, Russia received the last tranches from the IMF on the eve of the 1998 crisis.
The IMF has suspended its work with Russia from 2022 amid military actions in Ukraine . On September 11, the IMF announced the possibility of conducting an annual review of the Russian economy for the first time since the beginning of the military conflict in Ukraine. The last review of Russia was published in early 2021. The organization stated that the economic situation in the region had become “more stable”, which allows it to resume the assessment. Later, the Ministry of Finance said that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission to Russia was postponed due to its technical unpreparedness to conduct consultations with the Russian Federation.
Earlier, the IMF reached a preliminary agreement with Ukraine.
