The Islamic State (IS, an organization recognized as terrorist in Russia, its activities are prohibited) is renewing its attempts to introduce terrorism in the UK, Politico reports, citing a report by MI5 Director General Ken McCallum. At a press conference, he stressed that the group is not as strong as it was 10 years ago, but the threat remains significant.
He recalled that ISIS made its presence known to modern society in 2014, when members of the group captured a significant part of northwestern Iraq and eastern Syria. In the spring, McCallum continued, “an offshoot of ISIS carried out a deadly attack” at the Crocus City Hall concert hall in Moscow.
According to the head of British intelligence, it was a “brutal demonstration of the capabilities” of terrorists. In summary, McCallum noted that over the past month, many crimes have come “to the table” of MI5, more than a third of which were somehow connected with the activities of terrorist groups.
Earlier it became known that the US together with its allies agreed to complete the military operation “Inherent Resolve” , which was carried out in Iraq against the group “Islamic State”. According to the representative of the American administration, the mission will be completed in a year, the conditions have been discussed with the Iraqi authorities.
