Microsoft Word for Windows users should be careful when saving their work and documents, as a nasty bug has been found in the program. The problem causes the word processor to delete files instead of saving them, TechRadar reports .

The bug was discovered in Microsoft Word from Microsoft 365 version 2409 build 18025.20104. It occurs when a user makes changes to a file, tries to close Word, and agrees to save the document by clicking a button in a pop-up window. As a result, the file may disappear, but it can sometimes be restored from the Recycle Bin.

To avoid this problem, it is recommended to manually save the document before exiting Word. In addition, journalists’ observations have shown that users of files whose extension is written in capital letters, such as .DOCX or .RTF, most often encounter the error.

Microsoft is investigating this issue and working on a fix. Users can temporarily revert to an earlier version of Word until the bug is fixed.

Microsoft previously recommended purchasing new PCs to run Windows 11.
