The Royal New Zealand Navy ship Manawanui, commanded by Captain Yvonne Gray, ran aground, caught fire and sank, 1News reports. The incident occurred off the coast of Upolu Island in the South Pacific.

According to the publication, the ship hit a reef and ran aground while conducting reconnaissance near the shore. There were 75 people on board, including four foreign servicemen. The captain ordered the launch of lifeboats and the return to shore. As Navy Commander Rear Admiral Garin Golding later stated, this decision was correct and saved lives.

During the rescue operation, one of the boats capsized on the reef, and people had to walk to shore. Two people were taken to hospital, and over 10 more people were injured and received medical care on the spot.

It was previously reported that the Chinese submarine that sank near the city of Wuhan was equipped with a compact nuclear reactor. It also had a hybrid power plant . The Type 041 submarine is similar to the Soviet Project 651E, developed by the Lazurit bureau in the 1980s. Only one such submarine was assembled in the USSR. In addition to the standard diesel-electric plant, it received a nuclear power plant.
