Montenegro has decided to follow the example of other Balkan countries – Croatia and Serbia – and reintroduce compulsory military service 18 years after its abolition, Kommersant reports. The proposal was made by Defense Minister Dragan Krapović.
Montenegro abolished compulsory military service in 2006. Five years ago, young Montenegrins were given the opportunity to voluntarily serve in the army for three months and begin professional service in the army. Currently, it numbers 2.4 thousand people. From 2025, Serbia will introduce a mandatory two-month conscription, Croatia – a 75-day one. In Montenegro, according to experts, the mandatory service period will be three months, as with voluntary service. According to the publication’s forecast, Kosovo and North Macedonia will follow Serbia, Croatia and Montenegro in making the corresponding decision.
Earlier, the head of the Human Rights Council, Valery Fadeyev, said that Russia should return to universal conscription . In his opinion, every young man, regardless of health, should go through the army.
