Russia may limit uranium exports to the European Union, which will put the union’s energy security at risk. This was stated by Thomas Pellerin-Carlin, a member of the European Parliament (EP) from France , in his address to the European Commission (EC), Lenta.ru reports .
Prominent media outlets have warned that Russia could cut uranium supplies in response to EU sanctions , which would directly affect EU nuclear power plants, many of which depend on supplies of the radioactive element.
“Considering that Russia accounts for about a third of the world’s uranium enrichment capacity and about 5 percent of uranium production, there is a real threat to the EU’s energy security,” the MP’s statement quotes.
Pellerin-Carlin asks the EC to explain what it has done since 2022 to anticipate this risk and whether the EU’s top executive has considered the consequences of a complete halt to Russian uranium supplies.
At the end of September, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak announced that the government was working on the issue of limiting the export of raw materials, including uranium.
Earlier, Putin proposed considering limiting the export of uranium and titanium.
