British actor Daniel Radcliffe, known for playing Harry Potter in the film adaptation of the novels by writer J.K. Rowling, has paid a touching farewell to actress Maggie Smith, who has died aged 89, the Daily Express reports. He said that Smith “had a fierce intellect, a delightfully sharp tongue, could intimidate and charm at the same time and was extremely funny.” The actress played the stern teacher Minerva McGonagall in the Potter films.

I was fortunate to work with her for 10 years on the Harry Potter films. I am blessed to have been on stage with her for so long! The word “legend” is overused, but if it applies to anyone in our industry, it applies to her. Thank you, Maggie ,” Radcliffe said in his farewell message.

Earlier it was reported that Smith, known for her roles in Harry Potter and Downton Abbey, died in  hospital , as reported by her sons. The star’s relatives noted that everyone was devastated by this tragic event. Smith is survived by two sons and five grandchildren.

The actress’s sons also thanked the hospital staff where their mother was hospitalized. They noted that the hospital staff showed boundless kindness and care in the last days of Smith’s life.
